Summer vacation is the best time of the year for participating at some masterclasses. It’s fun, there’s enough time to prepare for it and it’s a wonderful way to spend time playing flute! Not to mention the fact that it is a great occasion to make new acquaintances, new friends and maybe it is the best chance to study with your idols of the flute world! However there are some basic guidelines to follow if you want to get most out of your time and to have an unforgettable experience.
Prepare yourself in advance!
The vacation is the right time for the laziness and for being relaxed. But don’t exaggerate with having rest from flute before your upcoming masterclass.

You wouldn’t want to hear all the same things your teacher tells you week from week. Instead you might want to get some fresh ideas and advices. So polish well your flute playing – sound, scales, etc. – before having a lesson at your masterclass. It will help you enormously to make a step forward instead of repeating all the same things over and over again.
Play the pieces you know well already!
Masterclass isn’t a right place to learn the piece and to decipher the difficult passages. Let’s be honest – it’s have to be done at home, and it is so boring for auditors to listen to someone struggling with playing the right notes.
See the big picture!
When you’re working on a piece at masterclass keep in mind that rarely advices you receive are meant only for the piece you’re playing at the moment. Maybe you can use your new knowledge in other pieces as well?
Ask questions!
If you’re curious about something or if you have any doubts ask for a better explanation. It’s important that you understand exactly what your professor wants from you!
Make friends!
There’s no better opportunity to make friends than at attending a masterclass. You can meet people with very similar interests there and you will definitely have a lot in common. It’s even more interesting if you’re abroad – other cultures and other points of view – these are experiences that enrich your own life! If you can, bring some duets and encourage others to give a try to play something together! it can make a special musical bond between you that lasts much longer than masterclass itself!
