Summer holidays

Holidays!!! Finally!
During the summer holidays it is easy to „forget” to practice. It is OK to take a week or two free from the flute to rest and „recharge the batteries”, but not all the summer of course.
Practicing your instrument during the holidays doesn’t have to be a torturous experience. It doesn’t mean staying inside for hours while your friends are having fun outside.
The best way to avoid the boring practice hours is participating at a summer music camp. Imagine meeting new friends, playing together and having fun after the music lessons!
If you can’t participate at a camp, maybe you should simply try to practice together with some of your friends. It is much more entertaining!
You can also buy some book of popular melodies or a book of tunes from famous cartoons and practice sight-reading! Find the pieces you have always wanted to learn, but you haven’t had enough time. They can be easy ones or difficult ones, important that YOU like them!
Remember also, that the most easy way to get to practice is to forget the „I’ll do it later...” ...sorry, but this doesn’t work. It is better to schedule your practice time in the morning, and enjoy your free day after. Otherwise somewhere in your head you’ll have the thought about work not done.

Sometimes I suggest using a kitchen timer – put it on 20 minutes, 30 minutes – depends on the age and level. And go on without looking at the timer. But remember to start the countdown when your flute is assembled, your scores are prepared etc., usually the first 5 minutes are difficult, but than the concentration takes over.
Be sure to know your goal for each practice session. The goal can vary time from time. You can try to make your sound better or work with scales. You can learn a piece from the work your teacher gave for the summer. Choose one thing to improve! |
